Effie Mozelle Smith, 100, of Jefferson City, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Villa Marie Nursing Home.

Mozelle, as she preferred to be called, was born September 2, 1918 in Trumann, Arkansas to George August and Millie June (Garner) Smith.

Mozelle graduated from Poplar Bluff Senior High School in 1937, third in her class of 111 students. She spent her early years on the family farm in Arkansas, but had to leave home as a teenager to live and work with a family in Poplar Bluff in order to attend high school.

Mozelle moved to Jefferson City December 1938 and began employment with the Missouri Division of Employment Security. She had a long and successful career, rising to the position of Programmer III when she retired in May 1980 with 41 ½ years of continuous employment with the same agency.

Mozelle was a member of the Jefferson City First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She proudly purchased her own home in Jefferson City where she loved to garden and grow flowers. She was a devoted daughter and sister becoming caregiver for her mother in her senior years. Mozelle was wonderful letter writer to her cousins and the many friends she made throughout the years. She was a voracious reader and avidly followed politics and current events. She enjoyed music, movies, and sports, especially St. Louis Cardinal baseball!

Mozelle leaves behind many friends and cousins to miss her and her remarkable humor. She was preceded in death her parents and a brother, Warren G. Smith.
