Joshua was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Clark Shultz/Schultz. (Henry Shultz was in Kanawha County before January 1, 1839 when he bought 100 acres of property from Jesse Inscoe. He married Elizabeth Clark, daughter of Jesse and Susan Pauley Clark, in Kanawha Co on Jan 17, 1840.) Joshua married Martha Ann Pauley, daughter of Meredith and Myluda Neal/Neale Pauley in Kanawha County on 17 December 1863. They had at least eight children: Charles Sherman, Arnettie/Arnetta J, Mary E, George, Meredith Amos, John, Joshua/Mitchell, Montiville. Joshua served in the Civil War as a Private in Co C, 7th West Va Cavalry. He enlisted 5 Sept 1861 and was discharged Aug 1, 1865. He was in the Lynchburg Raid in June 1864. He served 3 years, 10 months, 26 days. His pension papers show a disability of disease of the kidneys, several pains in his back effecting his kidneys caused by cold, exposure, damp weather and hard marching. He had fever and small pox in 1863 and never fully recovered from these troubles. He listed partial loss of eyesight, also a great deal of trouble of the heart which was to the best of his knowledge a result of exposure while in military service and a result of mumps and rheumatism. His Civil War Pension File says that he died on the way to Charleston to cash his pension check of $75.

Martha died 7 September 1910 in Kanawha County. It is not known where she is buried. Joshua secondly married Ellen Alice Brogan Williams, the widow of George Washington Williams, son of William H and Nancy Tudor Williams. Ellen's parents were James and Mary J Newcomer Brogan. Joshua and Ellen were married in Kanawha County on 5 October 1914.

Joshua was born in Kanawha County, VA. In later years, his descendants used the spelling Schultz.
