Betty Council Poole, a retired director of Comprehensive Daycare for the Philadelphia School Board, died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018. She was 78.
She was affectionately known as “Bet.” She was born on July 16, 1940 in Whiteville, N.C. She was the first born child of William and Ruth A. Baldwin. The family later grew to include William Jr., Della, Gloria, Ronald and Gregory.
She graduated from Central High School, previously named The Whiteville Negro High School, where she made many lifelong friends.

She headed North to settle with family, which had moved to Baltimore in 1954, then decided to attend Morgan State College. She later transferred to Bowie State University, where received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.
While at Bowie, she met a talkative Philadelphian, Albert Poole, and they entered into a relationship. This relationship proved to be a small piece to the puzzle of her life that would play a part in the tale of this story.
After their relationship ended, she was introduced to Mason Council during a blind date. Their romance budded into marriage and two children were born to their union, Nadine and Aaron Council. She had a short moment of joy with her three grandchildren who preceded her in death, Brenda, Cha and Victoria Council.
As she found her love for teaching second grade, they moved from Washington, D.C. back to Mason’s hometown of Oak City, N.C. She ran her own business called Sweet and Sassy Wig Boutique in Tarboro, N.C. and later in Rocky Mount, N.C. for the next 15 years. She moved to Baltimore in 1984.
She later moved back to Philadelphia, where she would marry Albert Poole. While in Philadelphia, she taught the 6th grade and became director of Comprehensive Daycare for the school board. She retired in 2002 for a life of travel and social connections.

Poole was a member of various organizations including the Sears Book Club, the Gathering of Reading Women, Urban League, the National Association of Colored Women, NAACP and AFT. She was a founding member of the Philadelphia/New Jersey Chapter of the Whiteville Central Alumni Association.
Poole later joined the Kroc Center, Salvation Army Senior Group — the Golden Gems, which spawned the “Get Up and Go Girls” travel group. The group traveled to Alaska, Canada, Atlanta, California, Kentucky, Las Vegas and New Orleans.
She was active in every church that she joined. One of her proudest accomplishments was being founder of the Circle of Friends — a group of retired ladies. They bonded as friends, travel partners and explorers of life after retiring.
Services were held on Dec. 29 at Greater Bibleway Temple, 1461 N. 52nd Bible Way.
