Lynn Luther Martin, 77, departed this life on March 12, 2019, at Share Convalescent Home, Alva, Oklahoma. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Alva High School Auditorium, Alva, Oklahoma, with Dr. W. Jay Tyree officiating. Wharton Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lynn was born September 11, 1941, in Springfield, Missouri. His parents were the late Luther Washburn Martin and his wife, Jeanne Frances Reynolds Martin. Lynn was baptized into Christ in 1953 at the St. James Church of Christ, St. James, Missouri. Lynn was a member of the Alva Church of Christ, Alva, Oklahoma, and had been active in his faith his entire life, preaching, leading songs and supporting many church ministries.

As a small child his family lived in Springfield, Missouri, and Cedartown, Georgia. In August 1947, Lynn, his mother and sister Judy boarded a train in southwest Missouri near their grandparents’ farm in Newton County, and traveled to Rolla, Missouri, where their dad Luther and his business partners were about to go on the air with KTTR Radio. The family settled first in Northwye, and later in Rolla.

Lynn attended the Rolla Public Schools, graduating from Rolla High School in 1959. He went on to attend the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (now the Missouri University of Science and Technology), the University of Missouri-Columbia, and Northwestern State University, Alva, Oklahoma, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in psychology.

As a teen Lynn’s first entrepreneurial project was the creation of Diamond Label Distilled Water, which he ran from the family basement. He enlisted his younger siblings in washing collected gallon jugs while he ran the still. His product was sold in local drug and grocery stores.

With funds from his Grandmother Martin, he purchased his first camera and began a six-decade career in photography. Lynn’s first photography job (as a high school student) was with the Rolla Daily Herald, Rolla, Missouri, where he provided regular photo shots for publication. As he honed his skills he attended many courses across the U.S. and over the years provided cherished photos for families throughout the Midwest. He received a number of photographic awards for his work.

Concurrent with learning photography, Lynn worked at his dad’s radio station during high school as a deejay. He was learning the family business, including climbing the radio tower to change light bulbs.

While preaching at Licking Church of Christ, Licking, MO, he was introduced to a sweet high school student, Marione Elaine Derrickson. She happened to be the daughter of the local newspaper publisher. As they dated he determined she was “the one,” and they married February 1, 1963, at KTTR Radio, Rolla, Missouri.

The twist to the story was that the wedding was scheduled and conducted on February 2, 1963, at the Licking Church of Christ as had been planned. It seemed that the blood test dates were about to expire, and to be legal the marriage had to meet a deadline. Marione’s mother did not know of this wedding secret until several years later.

Lynn and Marione both worked at KTTR as newlyweds, where he was news director and later station manager. Lynn was instrumental in expanding the small station footprint and more than doubling it’s size, including the construction of a fallout shelter where broadcasting could occur, if the facility were ever needed.

On January 1, 1969, in partnership with Lynn’s dad, Lynn and Marione purchased KALV Radio in Alva, Oklahoma, which they operated until it was sold in 1988. They began the Newsgram free publication around 1971, and it grew from a half sheet of headlines distributed to restaurants into a publication now circulated weekly to residents of three counties. On April 1, 1990, they bought the Alva Review-Courier local newspaper. Lynn continued his interest in photography, purchasing a studio in Alva, which he operated until the symptoms of cancer and its treatment became too challenging. He always said he never intended to retire.

Lynn was a member of the Alva Kiwanis Club where he served in many capacities, including as president. He was an avid flyer, traveling many miles in his plane to cover weddings and news stories.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Jeanne Martin of Broaddus, Texas; a brother, Kurt Reynolds Martin of Palestine, Texas; and a sister, Marta Ann Martin Ward (Mrs. Bob) of Cypress, Texas.
He is survived by Marione, his wife of 56 years of the home; a daughter, Marisa Dye, and her husband Darrel of Ponca City; seven grandchildren that include Katherine Lunn and husband Trey of Alva, Oklahoma; Jolie Kuhlmann of Torrington, Connecticut; Kaitlyn Dye, Jessica Dye, Whitney Dye, Luther Kuhlmann, and Addie Dye, all of Ponca City; one great-granddaughter Gabriella (Brie) Lunn; two sisters, Judy Jeanne Martin Doering (Mrs. Harlan) of Tyler, Texas, and Tara Lee Martin Calhoun of Norman, Oklahoma; and many other relatives.

The family would like to thank the medical teams of Dr. Craig Reitz, Oklahoma City, and Dr. Philip M. Self, Alva, Oklahoma, Share Medical Center, and Share Convalescent Center for their never wavering expertise and support of Lynn during his illness. A special thank you is also sent to the many friends who have prayed, telephoned, texted, and sent cards and gifts to make Lynn’s journey so much easier.
