Former Grants Pass resident Lela Gertrude Porter, 100, of Henderson, Nevada, died March 6, 2019, at her home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Lela G. Porter, age 100, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday March 6th, passing away peacefully in her sleep at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and John Holman in Henderson, Nevada.

Lela was born near Maxwell, Nebraska, the first-born daughter of Albert Carl and Julia E. Callaham. She was preceded in death by her parents, seven of her brothers and sisters, her first husband Leslie Wayne Solomon, and her second husband Nelson (Nels) J. Porter.

Lela was married to Leslie Wayne Solomon April 10th, 1937 in Maxwell, Neb., and later moved west to Grants Pass, Oregon. In 1942 they moved to their Grants Pass Homestead on Valley View Drive. During the 76 years she owned the property many members of the Callaham and Solomon family lived there. After Wayne’s passing in January 1969 she lived alone until her second marriage to Nelson (Nels) Porter on Sept. 13, 1975.

Lela worked for the Grants Pass School District for 22 years as a Food Service Baker and Cook, she was best known for her delicious cinnamon rolls. She worked at Highland Elementary and North Middle School retiring in 1979. After retiring she spent lots of time traveling with her husband Nelson Porter visiting relatives; hunting for pheasant and deer; fishing for salmon; camping and exploring the Oregon beaches. After Nelson’s passing in April 1997, Lela enjoyed helping care for two of her great-grandchildren. In November 2010 she moved to Henderson, Nevada to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include sister Sadie (Ed) Schultz; sisters-in-law, Olga (Callaham) Balwin and Sharon Callaham; son, Darrell (Mary) Solomon and daughter, E. Diane (John) Holman. Lela (GG) was grandmother to seven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Lela’s funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, 612 NW A Street, Grants Pass, Oregon followed by a short reception and then graveside committal at 1:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Grants Pass.
