Known as "Cooler King" in the German Prison camp Stalag Luft III .On March 29,1993,in the House of Representatives,Mr.Everett asked for and was granted a minute to pay Tribute to Col.Jerry Sage . He said ," I would like for us to pause and recognize the passing last week of a true American Hero ,a former prisoner of war ,who retired from the Army March 1,1972 after 30 years of devoted and outstanding service to his country, who earned the name "Cooler King" because he was in solitary confinement 15 times while a prisoner in camp Stalag Luft III in Sagan ,Germany .He worked for 15 months on the huge ,three tunnel project known as "The Great Escape ", and the actor Steve McQueen portrayed Jerry and a mixture of other men in the movie about the efforts of these brave men ".After numerous attempts , the former Office of Strategic [ OSS ] member made his final escape across Poland after being a prisoner of war for over 3 years. After the war he became an instructor at West Point, He attended the Command and General Staff College and the War College .During the Cuban Missile Crisis he served in the Pentagon as a Staff Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.He visited Laos and trained with Montagnards in the highlands . As a Colonel,Sage was ordered to Bad Tolz,Germany ,and was Commander of the 10th Special Forces Group .After that he was ordered to duty with the Third Army in Atlanta and worked with Army ROTC programs at colleges and universities throughout the south . He became Assistant to the President of the University of South Carolina,Columbia,S.C. After a few years he left to teach high school in the public school system and was nominated and won ,"Teacher of the Year ",for the state of South Carolina for 1979 .At Enterprise,Ala. he was nominated and won as Enterprise Man of the Year for 1991 .
