Hazleton PA Plain Speaker, Sat. Oct. 29, 1938:
Mrs. Melinda Watson of 654 North Lafayette court will be 91 years old Sunday an expects to attend services, as is her regular custom, in the Diamond M.E. church of which she is the oldest member. She and a companion Miss Buhlah Klinger, formerly of Butler Valley, live together. Mrs. Watson possesses all her faculties with the exception of her sight which has been impaired due to cataracts on both eyes. Until a year ago she read newspapers and other periodicals with the aid of glasses and she also did considerable quilting and sewing. She is active on her feet but the past several months she said her memory has not been so good. For the past several months she has been troubled with neuritis. Mrs. Watson was born in Conyngham, her maiden name being Melinda Gardner. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Gardner passed away many years ago. She was married sixty years ago at Conyngham by the late Rev. Clemens to William Watson, who died thirty years ago at Ebervale where her only child, Anna Watson died at the age of 5. The parents of Mrs. Watson lived at Conyngham, for many years and from there they moved to Milnesville, being among the first settlers of that village. Mrs. Watson is the lone survivor of a family of seven children. When a girl, aged 17, Mrs. Watson said she was confirmed in the Milnesville M.E. church but she could not remember the name of the pastor who officiated. Mr. Watson moved to Hazleton from Ebervale ten years ago.

Hazleton Standard-Sentinel; Tuesday, June 6, 1939:
Mrs. Malinda L. Watson, one of Hazleton's best known residents, succumbed at her home at 8:05 o'clock last evening following an 8 weeks' illness of complications incidental to advanced age. Mrs. Watson was known as 'Auntie', to scores of regional residents who mourn her passing. She was a devout member of the Diamond M.E. church, of which she was a charter member, as well as the oldest member of the church and Sunday school.

A daughter of the late George And Susan Frailey Gardner, of Conyngham, she was the last surviving member of the Gardner family of six. She was born in Conyngham, October 30, 1847, and had she lived until next October would have observed her 92nd birthday.

Mrs. Watson was twice married, her first husband being the late Ashery Johnson, of Butler Valley. Later she wed the late Will Watson, of Ebervale, who was killed in the Ebervale mines in 1907.

In her younger years she was quite skillful in the art of knitting and quilting. She spent most of her life in Ebervale, locating in Hazleton ten years ago, and until the recent illness was able to do her own housework, enjoy automobile rides and attend church services.

Surviving are two sons by her first marriage, Charles Johnson, of Jeddo and George Johnson, of Philadelphia. Also eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren. She was the last surviving aunt of Mrs. Frank Whitfield and Mrs. Adella Culp, both of this city.

Funeral services will be conducted publicly in the Diamond M.E. church, with the Rev. Harry F. Brumbaugh, the pastor, officiating, at a time to be announced later. Interment will be made in the Vine street cemetery.
