He graduated from Unionville High School with the class of 1971 and worked during that time at the Severance Dairy Farm in Cass City. Following graduation, he began a career as a machinist at a carbide factory in Harrisville and was later employed as an attendant at the gas station in Unionville. Gary attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Mikado and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Despite a hunting accident that left him paralyzed nearly forty years ago, his spirit never wavered. Gary could often be found tearing apart a motor or repairing cars, especially his beloved Chevelle. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed riding motorcycles or anything that could excite his fearless nature.
Gary is survived by two children, Gregory Childs and his wife, Annette, of Mt. Morris, Tyra Joy Childs of Troy; his mother, Harriett Childs of Unionville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Amanda & Michael Ramberg of Flushing, Michael & Gabby Merin of Mt. Morris, JT Kreps of Troy; two great-grandchildren, RoseLee O’Neill of Flushing, Thomas Merin of Mt. Morris; three brothers, one sister, and their spouses, Allen & Barb Childs of Munger, Lynn & Cheryl Childs of Reese, David & Anna Childs of Saginaw, Sharon Childs of Saginaw; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Fairgrove Presbyterian Church with Rev. Philomena Ofori-Nipaah officiating. Burial followed at the Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove.
