Vilos worked as a barber during his early adulthood, amassing a considerable clientele. He married Sadie Ann Bailey, daughter of Joseph Charles Carleton Bailey, who managed the business affairs of his father, Fayette Cassander Johnson. The young couple removed from Lennoxville, QC to Lancaster, NH in 1895, where Vilos and his brother, Harlow, opened a branch of Johnson Bros. Meat Packing, Inc. Following the death of his beloved wife in 1904, Vilos married her caregiver, Martha Esther ("Mattie") Kenny, and purchased a large farm on Pond Hill in Lunenburg, VT, where the family settled permanently.

His given name was in honor of a female ancestor via the Reynolds line from many generations before whose surname was Vilos, variations of which occur in Greek, Yugoslavian, and Romance languages. The Vilas family of Alstead, NH and Essex Co., VT are distant relatives.
