GeLee C. Hendrix

GeLee Corley Hendrix, 75, of 3 Acorn Court, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004.
Born in Marthaville, La., she was the daughter of the late George Leemon and
Freddie Corley.
GeLee C. Hendrix, CG, FASG, was a graduate of Auburn University in Alabama. She
earned her bachelor's at the School of Pharmacy in 1950, and was licensed in the
state of SC that same year. She and her husband, Artis Hendrix, were the owners
of Stone Plaza Pharmacy in Greenville, and she was recognized as one of the
first pioneers for women in the pharmaceutical profession. Her second career was
as a nationally known genealogist. She was certified as a genealogist in 1983.
She won several awards for her outstanding research abilities. She gave over 46
lectures, published over 24 articles and published over 8 books and many maps
over her career in genealogy. Genealogy was definitely in GeLee Hendrix's blood.
She was a fellow of the American Society of the US Genealogists, which is an
honorary society limited to 50 members, known as "Fellows."
She was a member of Northgate Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Artis O. Hendrix; three daughters and
sons-in-law, Lee H. and Ronald A. Smoak of Canton, Ga., Lynn H. and Jethro
Felton of Duluth, Ga., and Leslie H. and Tommy Hollingsworth of Travelers Rest;
a son, Lance C. Hendrix, of Greenville; a brother and sister-in-law, Wilton and
Mary Corley, of Louisiana; and five grandchildren, Christopher Smoak, Brittany
and Jay Felton, GeLee and Jacob Hollingsworth.
Services will be Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Woodlawn
Funeral Home, with Dr. Robert Whaley of Northgate Baptist officiating. Burial
will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., before the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Upstate, 1385 Rogers
Road, Anderson, SC 29621.
