In his young adult life he was employed in Toronto in a Dry Goods House. From there he moved to Montreal to a higher position in an affiliate of the same Dry Goods House. Subsequently going into business in Welland county when the new canal was under construction. He then married Mary Latimer and the two moved by Ox cart to Minnedosa, Manitoba. He engaged there in mercantile pursuits until his appointment there as manager to the Union Bank of Canada. He served one term as Mayor of the town.
