Donald R. Rummel was born on a dryland cotton farm in Wellington, Collingsworth County TX on June 11, 1937, to Gilroy and Lola Holland Rummel; he passed away at age 81 on March 5, 2019.

In preparation for a career, Don attended Texas A&M University where he earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Entomology. While at Texas A&M he was an active member of the Corp of Cadets and served as First Sargent of his outfit A-AAA and he served on the Regimental staff. After completing his bachelor’s degree, he served in the United States Army and was assigned to Fort Bliss. His assignment included active duty in the classified message center during The Bay of Pigs incident. A love of the soil directed Dr. Rummel’s career as a cotton insect researcher, and he was recognized as a world’s authority on the cotton boll weevil with numerous professional publications to his credit. Donald married his high school sweetheart Ada Thomas on January 28, 1958, in Hereford, Texas. Don was married to his high school sweetheart for 61 years and they raised three daughters. He also was grandfather to five grandchildren, and a great grandfather to three great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his father Gilroy Martin Rummel; mother Lola Mabel (Holland) Rummel; sister Nancy Louise (Rummel) Cox; and brother-in-law, Lilburn Frederick Cox Jr. Survivors include his wife, Ada (Thomas) Rummel; 3 daughters, Lezlie, Jamie and Leah; 5 grandchildren; a niece and nephew; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate his Don’s 81 years of life on March 9, 2019 at the Broadway Church of Christ, and graveside services were held at the Wellington Cemetery.
