Theodore G. Harris (Ted) 87, of Neptune New Jersey passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at home. He fought a courageous battle and is now with his Heavenly Father, many loved family members and friends, who helped guide him to his heavenly home.Ted was born in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Mattie Moore and William Harris. He attended the Carver School District in Salem, Va. He was an active member of Hollins Baptist Church, Hollins, Va. He was married to his first love, Ann Barksdale in January 1957, and from that union came two children, Teresa and Theodore, Jr. They later re-located to New Jersey and had two additional children, Donald and Mason. In 1995, his beloved wife passed after a lengthy illness. In 1997, he met and married his second wife, Barbara Holden, who passed away on February 11, 2017.In 1997 Ted and his wife Barbara joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church where they became active members. They organized the Busy Bee Club, which was a community group fellowship. He also served as President and Director of the Senior Choir and sang in both the Male and Gospel Choirs. Additionally, he served as a Trustee at Mt. Carmel and was on the Hospitality Committee. Ted's love for singing led him to join the Gospel Choir at the Neptune Senior Center Neptune, NJ.He served in the United States Army and was Honorably Discharged in January 1953. While serving, he received the Occupation Medal (Germany) as well as the Good Conduct Medal. During his years spent in the Army, he was stationed in Africa, several countries in Europe and was in the Korean War.Ted worked at the Sea Girt National Guard, Sea Girt, New Jersey. He retired in 1991 as an E7 Staff Sergeant. He loved to bowl and was one of the original founders of the Neptune Raiders Bowling Club. During his membership of over 20 years in the club, he held offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, until he was no longer able to attend. The Neptune Raiders Bowling Club has been in existence over 45 years. He was recently honored by the Seacoast Missionary Baptist Association for his work of faith and labors of love, which will not be forgotten.He is predeceased by his first wife Ann, and his second wife Barbara, and a granddaughter, Passion Riley. He is survived by his children, Teresa (Vickie) Harris (Barry Ellenwood, Sr.),Neptune, NJ; Theodore Harris, Jr. (Elaine Azeem), Pittsburgh, PA; Donald Dixon (Marion Murphy Dixon), Long Branch NJ; and Mason Williams, Bridgeport, CT.; his grandchildren Tamela Harris, Cary Sykes, Donna Dixon-Farrar, Amberly Matthews, Tamika Harris, Theodore Harris, III,Michael Harris and Evelyn Williams; thirteen great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; his cousins Thelma Perdue, Barbara Saunders, Moses Anderson; a special niece, Ellen Ross; a special friend Dorsey Demery; and a host of friends.Ted will be missed and remembered as a loyal, devoted, hard-working, humble and caring man. He will forever be cherished as a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend.
