Samuel H. Miller was born in Cleveland, Ohio June 26th, 1921 to Abe and Anna Miller, immigrants from Russia and Poland respectively. He was born into relative poverty, but was well educated, going on to earn degrees from Adelbert College and Harvard. He served in active combat in World War II and fought for the independence of Israel his entire life. He was also a humanitarian and philanthropist and was considered a living legend in Cleveland.

He started Forest City Enterprises in Cleveland in 1947 with his then brother-in-law and helped turn the company into a national leader in real estate development. He served on the board of directors at the Cleveland Clinic, was co-chairman of the Board of Trustees of Medical Mutual of Ohio, and a member of the Greater Cleveland Roundtable. He was a member of the board of trustees of John Carol University, Baldwin Wallace University, Notre Dame College, WVIZ ideastream, The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland Foundation, the Jewish National Fund, and the Police Memorial Board. Mr. Miller was an honorary trustee of Case Western University, an Honorary lifetime member of the board of trustees of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, a lifetime honorary trustee of the National conference of Christians and Jews and past chairman of the Cleveland Jewish Welfare Fund. Mr. Miller was also an early founder of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Mr. Miller met with popes and presidents, and worked with people at all levels, never forgetting his humble beginnings. He did all that he could every day to give to others regardless of race or religion, in order to provide the opportunity to be productive.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Maria Gale whom he married in 1982, and leaves four children from his first marriage.
