Born November 16, 1924, in Cleveland, Mississippi, Mr. Murphy, a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, will be missed by his loving family and friends.
He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and saw action in the South Pacific before serving in the Occupation Forces in Yokosuka, Japan.
He worked for Southwestern Bell and AT&T for over 30 years, retiring in 1979. Mr. Murphy loved to travel, enjoying fishing and many camping trips around the US with his sweetheart. He was a wonderful handyman and could fix or make almost anything in his workshop! And he cherished the times playing dominos with family and friends.
Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife of 18 years, Nadine Cleckler Murphy of Austin; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Connie Murphy of Denton, daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and James Dees, of Springfield, VA; son and daughter-in-law Michael Murphy and Tonya Netzley, of Austin; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law Chris and Robin Cleckler, of Austin, stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Casee and Greg Anderson of El Paso; grandchildren Andrew Dees of Alexandria, VA, Michael Murphy and Ryan Murphy of Austin and Cami Giles of Pipe Creek; step-grandchildren Eric Cleckler, of Houston, David Cleckler, of Sacramento, CA, Annie Wise, of Seattle, WA, and James and Brian Anderson of El Paso; and 6 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Berdy Duewall Murphy; his parents, Robert and Mamie Murphy; his brother, Joseph Murphy; and his stepson Charlie Cleckler.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 30th from 5 to 7pm at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, November 12th from 10 to 11am at Crestview United Methodist Church, 1300 Morrow St., Austin, TX. Graveside services will follow from 2 to 3pm at Cooks Point United Methodist Church, 4902 Presidential Corridor East (Hwy 21), Caldwell, TX.
