Riley “Butch” Carter Jr., age 75, of Gays passed away at 7:38 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center surrounded by his family.

Funeral Services honoring his life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Roger Long officiating. Burial with Military Rites will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019 at the funeral home.

Riley was born on December 23, 1943 in Mattoon the son of Riley and Florine (Pauley) Carter Sr. He married Marché Bartels on March 22, 1962.

Survivors include his wife Marché Carter of Gays, IL; daughters, Tabetha (Paul) Long and Tonya Carter; grandchildren, Dustin Long (Bobbi Malone), Nicole Shaffer, Brittany (Kirk) Tappendorf, Chaase Long, Christopher Fuller (Whitley Williams) and Drew Lampley; great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Waylon, Keagen, Alexis, Landon, Brooke, Breighton, Daphne, Kameron, Riley, Grayson and Deacon; brothers, Lloyd Carter and Carl Carter Sr.; sister, Marla Bridwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Riley was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Ronnie Carter; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Carter; and brother-in-law, Butch Bridwell.

Riley served honorably in the United States Navy as a diesel mechanic on air craft maintenance. He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #380. Riley loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed taking his grandchildren camping. Most of all, Riley cherished spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Memorial donations in his honor may be given to the COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Foundation.
