Dr. Warren Jerome Foster -- prominent physician, native and lifelong resident of Mobile, AL, departed this life on Friday, March 11, 2005 at a local hospital. He was the first child born to the the union of Warren Lewis Foster and Ophelia Pettus Foster. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. Carl Anthony Foster. Dr. Foster received his early education at St. Peter Claver Catholic Elementary School, Dunbar Junior High School and graduated in 1951 from Central High School. While attending Central High School, he was quarterback of the varsity football team and played semi-professional baseball for the Mobile Black Bears. Before his health began to fail, he was also an avid tennis player. He continued his studies at Tennessee State University, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. Dr. Foster received his M. D. degree from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee in 1959. After completing medical school, Dr. Foster did his surgical internship at Homer Phillips Hospital now Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He later did his surgical residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac Michigan, and further clinical work in Eloise, Michigan. Realizing a need, Dr. Foster returned to his home, Mobile to enter into medical practice serving the Mobile County and surrounding counties emphasizing the African American community. He practiced medicine at Blessed St. Martin de Porres Hospital and later paved the way for other Black professionals to practice medicine at other local hospitals such as Mobile General now the University of South Alabama Medical Center, Doctors Hospital, Providence Hospital and Mobile Infirmary. Dr. Foster also practiced at Singing River Hospital in Mississippi specializing in surgery until his retirement. Dr. Foster was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Medical Association, Meharry Medical College Alumni Association, a former member of the Orginal Dragons Social Club, Inc., and a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, children, Warren (Valarie) Foster, Cheryl Archer, Ingrid (Reginald) Foster, Maria (Vaughn) Owens, D.V.M., Michelle Foster, Ph.D., Oliver (Tonya) Harden, M.D., Martin (Lomita) Perkins, Esq., Winfred Moorer, Adrian (Angela) Moorer, Christopher (Taranika) Moorer, Joshua Foster, Corey, Brent, and Kevin Cooper; devoted brothers, LeBaron A. Foster, M.D. (Ret), and Julius L. Foster, P.D.; devoted sister, Barbara F. Glaude, R. PH, P.D.., very devoted uncles, Edwin (Pete) Foster, Reginald J. Pettus , Sr. and William B. Pettus, Sr., aunts, Fannie P. Foster and Alma Foster; a host of grandchildren, two great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, devoted friends, Joyce Cooper, John H. Nichols, and Richard Freeman, M.D. The family will receive friends at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 454 Charleston St, Wednesday, March 16, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebration. Rev. George Burden, S.S.J., celebrant. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Funeral arrangements entrusted to JOHNSON-ALLEN MORTUARY, 600 Chestnut Street, Mobile, AL 'Since 1893'
