Berta took her first breath on September 9, 1917 in Derby, IA. She was the youngest child of Burt and Margaret James. Berta was blessed to grow up with two sisters, Evelyn and Ona Lea and a brother Olin. She lived a full and wonderful life for 99 years until she took her final breath at 7 am on January 30, 2017 in Florence, AZ.While Berta was young, the family moved to Parkville, MO. where Berta spent much of her childhood. She graduated from high school and married Walter Blum in 1935, and they had two children , (Anita) Janeen 1938 and Walter, Jr. 1943. Walt always had a dream of living in Colorado. That wish did come true in 1944. The Trailways Bus Company transferred him to Denver.Walt died at the young age of 40 in 1952. As she did with everything in her life, Berta met the challenge with hard work and a positive attitude. She worked at the telephone company for a few years and she married George Moore in 1956. In 1959 a move to Castle Rock, and the purchase of the Dairy King Drive-In Restaurant ( then renamed Moores Dairy King) on Wilcox St., changed her life as she became acquainted with the friendly lo-cal folks and also met many good people when they stopped in as they passed through Castle Rock on I-25.The Moores closed the drive-in restaurant in the early 1970's and convert-ed the building to a Western Auto store. It was later sold and they retired. In retirement, Berta filled her time with family, friends, working part-time in the school cafeteria and the school bus garage for Douglas County Schools. It was also at this time that Berta started her long involvement with the Castle Rock Senior Center. When George died in 1985, she continued to be deeply involved with the growth of the Castle Rock Senior Center and loved all of the people associated with it. She served many terms as an officer/board member of the center. Berta was very active with the Douglas County Council on Aging. She was recognized by the governor's office for her efforts and was even interviewed on a Denver radio station.Roberta's passion for playing bridge with friends and family continued throughout her adult life. She had to stop playing with her friends at the Senior Center in January, 2015. Then she played occasional games with friends while Janeen would hold the cards for her. Consistent with how she handled all difficult things in her life, she accepted what it was and simply said that the time had come. Berta stayed in her home on Gilbert Street until May, 2015 when she moved to Denver to live with Janeen. She so appreciated her friends from the church and the senior center that would keep in touch with her, either in person or by a call or a note. In July of 2016 she moved to Az. to stay with Walt.Berta's wish and prayer for her final day was that she would be in her own bed and simply not wake up some morning. Her wish was granted at 7 a.m. January 30, 2017.Berta leaves behind her daughter Janeen Branvold (CO), her son Walter Blum, Jr (AZ), granddaughters Faith Branvold (CA), Mitzi Branvold (CA) and Heidi Miller (MO), her son in law Jimmy Miller (MO), and great grand-daughters Morgan Laufer (AR) and Taylor Laufer (MO) and many nieces and a nephew.Donations may be made in Berta's name to the Castle Rock Senior Center, The Methodist Church of Castle Rock or to the charity of your choice.A memorial service for Berta will be conducted at The Methodist Church in Castle Rock on April 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon to follow.Berta's ashes were privately interred in the gravesite of her first husband, Walter. Her wishes have been granted, as she was laid to rest at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary and Cemetery in Wheatridge, Colorado.
