Thomas W. Small, 77, of Meyersdale, Pa., passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at his residence, as a result of mesothelioma. Born Feb. 17, 1941, in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of the late John Howard and Martha Ruth (Smith) Small.

He was also preceded in death by brothers, James and Ronald Small, and sister-in-law, Patricia Small.

Thomas retired from Frostburg State University where he was a professor in the Geography Department. He studied and was an avid collector of early kerosene lighting and published a book on the subject.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Frances (Sommerville) Small; son, Stephan Small and wife, Sandra, Martinsburg, W.Va.; one very special grandson; brother, Jack Small, Peoria; and brother-in-law, Paul Sommerville, Austin, Texas.

Mr. Small was cremated in accordance with his wishes, and private services will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorial donations, in Mr. Small's name, be made to Somerset County Humane Society, 204 Whitetail Road, Somerset, PA 15501.
