Mrs. Eliza E. George, Fort Wayne Indiana's noted Civil War nurse, died of typhoid fever in an army camp in Wilmington, N.C., a month after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. She gave her life, like thousands of others, in the terrible struggle to preserve the Union. She accompanied Indiana regiments, nursing the sick, wounded, and became known affectionately as "Mother George".

Mrs. George was buried in Lindenwood Cemetery will full military honors and the Indiana Sanitary Commission erected a monument to her memory. She rests in the family plot of Fort Wayne's other great Civil War hero, Col. Sion S. Bass, who fell at Shiloh.

She was born in Bridport, Vermont and Died in Wilmington, North Carolina.
