Julia Childress Davis Payne, 96, of Scottsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 after a series of strokes. She was born on January 4, 1923 in Mitchells, Virginia, a daughter of the late Robert and Julia (Swisher) Childress. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands: Anderson Davis and Edward Ambrose Payne; sisters: Eloise Childress McMullen and Joan Childress Carpenter; and brothers: Robert and Carlton Childress. Julia graduated from Culpeper High School in 1940 and the UVA School of Nursing in 1944 as a Registered Nurse and worked her entire career at the UVA Medical Center. There she worked as a Pediatric Nurse, Nursing Supervisor, and was a member of the Nursing Staff Office. Julie was a proud member of the James River Baptist Church and The Scottsville Senior Center. Survivors include her step-children: Eddie Payne and wife, Maryna of Scottsville and Peggy Hicks of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces: Edwyna McMullen Wingo of Fairfax, Virginia and Robin Carpenter Rosen of Herndon, Virginia; and nephews: David Carpenter of Mitchells, Virginia and Meredith Childress of Grand Bay, Alabama. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 8, 2019 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home by Pastor Randy Golladay. Interment will follow in the Scottsville Cemetery.
