Peacefully on April 20, 2001, Louise Philippe passed away at the St. Claude Pavilion at the age of 97 years.

Louise was born in Guern (France) on July 30, 1903.

During the 11-day transatlantic passage, little Louise slipped and was seen to be almost falling off the ship. M. Julien Philippe, her future husband's uncle(!), caught her by the end of her long dress and rescued her. The family arrived by train in St Claude on April 7, 1905, to join Guillaume who had made the journey in 1904. The young family inhabited the barn Guillaume had built while a log house was built.

Louise married Joseph Philippe in 1936.

She was predeceased by her loving husband in 1979 and by two sons at birth.

Louise leaves to mourn her passing one son, Roland (Claudette Rosset) four grandchildren, Lilliane (Guy Sorin), Gisele (Normand Bosc), Raymond (Susan McAdam) and Emanuelle; six great-grandchildren, Chantal, Christine and Andre Sorin, Aubry and Theo Bosc and Shealyn Philippe; one sister Rosalie; three sisters-in-law, Eugenie Dondo, Victorine Gobin and Madeleine Philippe as well as numerous friends from the Club d'Age d'Or, the Manor ,and the Pavilion.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m., at the St.Claude Roman Catholic Church, with Father Rodrigue Bouchard officiating.

As expressions of sympathy, if friends wish so, donations may be made in Louise's memory to the St. Claude Pavilion.

As noted above: With six others of her family, Louise was one of the people mentioned on the manifest of the SS Vancouver, as arriving on April 2, 1905, in Halifax, NS, from Liverpool, England. They were seven among 63 members of the following Breton families, nearly all from Guern or nearby villages, some of whom may well have been headed for Red Deer in British territories destined to become what is now Alberta, but a missionary aboard convinced them all(?) to head for St-Claude, instead:

Cloaree, Corbeil, Couronne, Dacquay, Dondo, David, Gloux, Guigneno, Jute, Kervegant, Le Bris, Le Brun, Le Carre, Le Devehet / Le Devehat, Le Franc, Le Francheur, Le Gourrince, Le Mial, Le Pape, Maurre, Puybasset, Philippe, Phillipot, Rebiffe, Zegouzo

This excerpt from the volume "Anecdotes, Saint-Claude, Manitoba, 1892-1992" recounts in detail her near-death experience during the transatlantic ocean voyage:

This excerpt from the same volume tells us she was elected as a member of the committee charged with the administration of the business of the Saint-Claude Hospital on February 10, 1958:
