Warren Franklin Bass, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 3, 2019. Warren was born on August 15, 1921 in Toccoa, Georgia to Oscar Aaron Bass, Sr and Lois Poythress Bass.

The third of four children, he was named for President, Warren G. Harding. His family moved back to Burlington during his early childhood, establishing the family business downtown, Bass's Café. Warren earned his first paychecks working at the family business (which he fondly remembered were issued in the form of candy bars). Warren graduated from Broad Street School in Burlington. He also earned his Eagle Scout, an accomplishment for which he was very proud and had the opportunity to attend Boy Scout Jamboree.

Following his Dad's military example of having served in France in WWI, Warren answered the call of duty and, like other members of the "greatest generation," he enlisted and served in WWII. He was a valuable soldier using his expertise to repair military bombers.

When Warren was just 15 years old, his Dad passed away. The family expanded when his mother remarried Mr. Graham Murphy and his sister, Mary Graham, was born. The family moved to Greensboro, a fateful decision, as it was there he would meet the love of his life. While in Greensboro on furlough from the service, Warren's older sister, Frances introduced him to her beautiful friend, Mildred McDonald. It was love at first sight! At that time Mildred was secretary to Victor Levy at Greensboro Manufacturing Company. Impressed with his military service, work ethic and of course, Mildred's recommendation, Mr. Levy hired Warren on the spot, beginning his business career that spanned over 30 years with Greensboro Manufacturing Co. as the Director of Transportation. Later in life he owned The Apinol Company and was associated with Greensboro Trailer Sales & Service.

Mildred and Warren married in June, 1947 and were together until her death in 2009. They had two daughters, Nancy Ann and Susan Elaine, to whom he was a devoted and loving father who instilled Christian values. Warren was active in the Greensboro Jaycees and was a member of the Young Business Men's Club. Warren and Mildred joined First Baptist Church of Greensboro as newlyweds. Warren loved the Lord and the Church and was active in numerous capacities including serving as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also was very supportive of Mildred's involvement in the ceramic department, which she initiated at First Baptist.

Warren was an avid golfer, enjoying Saturday outings with his regular foursome at Starmount Forest Country Club. He also was very proud of his one-time, hole-in-one leaving him with dreams of the PGA. Hopefully, he has a tee time in heaven today with Al, Hugh and Wilson. He enjoyed Carolina basketball, a good glass of scotch, his rocking chair and any reason to dress up and have a good time. He was known for his enjoyment of family, friends and his hearty laugh. In his later years he was an honorary member in Susan's, "Girl's Night Out" group. He was the center of attention at their annual Christmas party. A car fan, Warren often mentioned the first car he and Mildred bought, a 1947 Chevrolet, but later his fondness leaned toward Cadillacs.

Warren was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather. He displayed sacrifice, support and unconditional love especially as he cared for Mildred during her final years of sickness. Warren was truly a prince!

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by sisters, Zenobah Bass Godfrey, Frances Bass Rigsbee, brother, Oscar Aaron Bass, Jr. and grandson-in-law, Shawn Junus Houston.

Survivors include, Nancy B. Drake (David) of Burlington, Susan E. Bass of the home who was a dedicated caregiver for Mildred and Warren, youngest sister, Mary M. Berkelhammer, grandchildren, Susan D. Sellew (Wes), and Anne D. Houston, and his great grandchildren who were the lights of his life, Fox and Haile Warren Sellew and Millie and Mary Etta Houston, and numerous nieces and nephews to whom he was very close.

The family would like to thank Warren's caregiver and dear friend, Rodney Brasley for his companionship and dedication during the last 4 years. Rodney and Warren had many enjoyable outings, driving all over the Piedmont, stopping often to grab a bite, pay a visit or reminisce of places and things from days gone by. The family is very grateful for the relationship.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11am, Thursday, March 7, 2019 at First Baptist Church, Greensboro. Interment will be follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington.
