Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the Union Army at age 18, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D, 126th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 22, 1862. He participated in the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, and was awarded the CMOH for his bravery on the Third Day of the Battle (July 3). His citation reads "The colors being struck down by a shell as the enemy were charging, this soldier rushed out and seized it, exposing himself to the fire of both sides". His Medal was issued on December 1, 1864. Promoted to Corporal on December 9, 1863, and to Sergeant on June 9, 1864, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on June 3, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia.
