John O. Daugherty, 96, died February 25, 2019 peacefully at his home in Greensboro, NC. A Virginia native, he was born and raised in Culpeper County. He served two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935-36 building roads and fighting forest fires in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Mr. Daugherty was a World War II U.S. Army veteran with nearly 25 years of service. He retired from the Army with the rank of Sergeant Major E-9 and served combat duty with the 78th Infantry “Lightning” Division. He was awarded several medals and citations during his military career, including the Korean Defense service medal; the Army commendation medal with 13 oak leaf clusters; the Good Conduct medal with 15 loops; the American campaign medal; the European Africa Middle East medal with three battle stars; the WWII Victory medal; the WWII German Occupation medal; and the National Defense Service medal.
Following his military retirement, he settled in Greensboro with his family and worked at Davidson’s Wholesale Supply for a number of years before retiring for good from the workforce. He greatly enjoyed working in his yard and sharing his homegrown garden produce with friends and family.
He is survived by his sons, John Michael of FL and John Duddy of the U.K., his daughter, Sharon, of Wilmington, his daughter-in-law Lori of FL, granddaughter Kelsey, and extended family from VA and the United Kingdom.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte, his parents, his brother Andrew Lee, and his sisters Verna Mae Daugherty, Rachel Leeth of Waynesboro, VA, and Mary Curtis of Culpeper, VA.
There will be a graveside service at Westminster Gardens on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. with Chaplain John Conner officiating. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. George Brothers Funeral Services is assisting the Daugherty family with the arrangements.
