He served our country faithfully with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He lived most of his life afterwards (1948-1999) in Jacksonville, working with the railroad at Fruit Growers Express. In 1999 he moved to Lake City where he has resided for the past 13 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who liked gardening and fishing, but most especially he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of Lantern Park Baptist Church, and a 32 Degree Mason in good standing with the Woodstock Park Lodge # 313. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Chesteen, Leon, Kyle, & Marshall Wheeler, his sisters, Stella Norris, Maude Norris and Betty Raulerson.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 20 years, Alice Wheeler of Lake City, FL: daughter, Barbara Powell (Ray) of Jacksonville, FL; grandson, Edmund Jeffers (Kay) of Orlando, FL; granddaughter, Michelle Forte (Brett) of Jacksonville, FL; great grandson, Christopher Jeffers and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012 at Lantern Park Baptist Church with Pastor Neal Howard officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Varnes Cemetery, Lake Butler, FL. Visitation with the family will be Thursday evening, March 8, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
