Fern A. Bergeson was born in Miles City on Jan. 16, 1918. She met her Lord on June 3, 2007.
Fern was the second oldest daughter born to Merton L. and Lulu Burch Beach. After her mother died in a tragic auto/pedestrian accident, Fern and her sisters were raised by their father and paternal grandmother, Emma Daniels.
She attended Billings schools and graduated from Billings High School in 1936.
After graduation, she worked at The Jane Drake Shop and Newberry's Department Store. For many years, she worked on a part time basis in the hosiery department of the Hart-Albin Company.
Fern married Don Dean Bergeson on Easter eve, April, 16, 1938, at the First Methodist Church in Billings. They enjoyed 47 wonderful years together before Don passed away in March of 1985.
Fern and Don were a very active couple and participated fully in events surrounding the Jaycees, Al Bedoo Shrine and the Yellowstone Country Club. Together, they loved square dancing, Sunday car rides and bridge. Fern especially loved bridge and played in a number of marathons over the years, eventually giving up the game earlier this year. She loved the cards and the companionship, making many lifelong friends. For many years, she and her sister, Ruth Bezdek, volunteered at Deaconess Hospital.
As an avid sports fan, she staunchly supported her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their athletic careers. She was a fan of all local sports teams, especially the Billings Royals and the Senior Broncs. In later years she shared her loyalties with the Atlanta Braves and Denver Broncos. Mom was also a dedicated bowler and competed in league play for many years. As much as she enjoyed the sport, the friendships and relationships she acquired with her teammates are what she remembered most fondly.
Fern was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 70 years and active in her Circle. She was also a member of Bath Zabbia Daughters of the Nile and the Al Bedoo Classics.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Betty Lanning; her son-in-law, Curtis A. Beswick; her firstborn son, Dean Ward Bergeson; and her beloved husband, Don.
She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Beswick and Patricia (Will) McCoy of Billings; and her sons, Roger (Debra) Bergeson of Portland, Ore., and David Bergeson of Billings. Also surviving are six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Barbara (Lee) Richardson and Shelby of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Ashley (Greg) Passon and Skylar and Gage of Billings, Aida Angel and Kimani and Kiara Patterson of Denver, Bruce Beswick of Portland, Brodie Bergeson of Belgrade and Amanda (David) Wright and Cody and Austin of Portland. Also surviving are her sisters, Laura Twiss of Citrus Heights, Calif., Helen Barnes of Rocklin, Calif., and Ruth (Arnold) Bezdek of Billings.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at the First United Methodist Church, located on Fourth Avenue North at North Broadway. Interment will precede the memorial service at 12:30 p.m. in Mountview Cemetery. Smith Downtown Chapel is assisting with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Al Bedoo Shrine hospital patient transportation fund, PO Box 20673, Billings, MT 59104.
