Armstrong Leonard Varner was born in Belmont Co., Ohio 4th October 1849. He moved to Linn Co., then to Jackson Co., Iowa. He was married three times. His first wife, Ida Wright, died shortly after childbirth. Armstrong then married Permilla Snodgrass and had five children with her. Their union ended in divorce. Armstrong married Lavina Kimbro and they had eleven children. Lavina married a Mr. Moeller after Armstrong's death. She is interred next to Armstrong in Mt. Hope Cemetery. At least three of Armstrong's children are buried near by. Isaac Ogden, twin sons, Wesley Leslie and Leslie Wesley.
