William J. Young was born near Prestonsburg, Floyd county, Kentucky, March 4, 1811, and died in Otoe county, Nebraska, October 13, 1899, aged 88 years, 6 months and 9 days.

Mr. Young grew to manhood in his Kentucky home, where he was married on the 7th of Jan., 1832, to Miss Cynthia Ellington. Two children were born to them in Kentucky, and in 1837 they removed to Platte county, Missouri, they being among the first settlers of that county. In 1842 they again moved, and settled in Andrew county, Missouri, and from there they moved just over the line into Nodaway county, Missouri, where they lived until 1850, when they again moved, this time into Mills county, Iowa, and in March, 1857 they came to Nebraska, and located in Cass county, where they resided until 1869, when they came to Seward county and located on a homestead in H town, three miles east of Seward. They resided on their homestead until 1879, when they came to Seward where they made their home until the death of Mother Young, who was 69 years of age at the time of her death.

Twelve children, six sons and six daughters, were born to them, seven of whom survive their parents: Mrs. M. F. Chapin of Denver, John R. of Seward, Mrs. John P. (Mary) Jones of Marquette, Nebr., Mrs. S. Cannon of Custer county, Nebr., Mrs. M. W. Wait of Seward, William C. of Cass county, Nebr., and Mrs. Nettie Mahaffey of Seward.

Mr. Young went to Cass county about eleven years ago, and two years later was married to Mrs. Margaret Lowe of Otoe county, who survives him. Mr. Young had been a member of the M. E. church for many years. His remains were brought to Seward Saturday and laid to rest in the north (Seward) cemetery.
