Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through his servant Jack Bradford Johnson.

He was given life by his creator and was born on September 28, 1945, the child of Alton and Amelia Johnson in Quitaque, TX. Later in 1945, he received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. In 1967, he publically confessed his faith and was confirmed at St Paul Lutheran Church in Canyon, TX, where he received the precious gift of the Lord’s life-giving body and blood.

On September 3, 1966, he received the gift of a beloved companion in his spouse, Edwina. He was blessed with the gift of two daughters, Krista and Heather. God blessed Jack’s life with many special people as he served God in his vocations for his country, church, work, community and at home.

While on scholarship to play basketball at West Texas State University, Jack was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. He faithfully served his country until 1975. Jack then began his 34 year career with Gulf Oil Company which later became Chevron Oil and held positions from Construction and Maintenance Engineer to Sales Management. The friendships he made during his career, especially while on strike duty in the 1980’s, continued on through the rest of his life.

Jack and his entire family were and continue to be active members of the Lutheran church. St. Philip Lutheran (Houston, TX) and St. Paul church in Plainview holds a special place in their heart. Jack served the Lord in various ways as an Elder, Congregation President, and Evangelism leader among many other roles. The friendships he made with his brothers and sisters in Christ along with his contagious positive attitude was evidence of Christ’s light shining brightly in his life.

After retirement, Jack and Edwina settled back in Quitaque, TX where Jack became very active in the community. He worked with friends and retired high school classmates on various committees ranging from Beautification, Cemetery, Economic Development, Caprock Partners and Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered his time by helping build the Quitaque Hope Center and Tri-County Meals facilities. He maintained the Quitaque.com website and regularly delivered Meals on Wheel, which was a special experience he shared with his five grandkids.

Jack cherished his beloved bride of 52 years, his daughters, son-in-law’s, and his precious grandchildren. Jack and Edwina regularly hosted “Camp Quitaque” each summer where he showed his grandchildren how to fire rockets, shoot guns and have fun in the country. He documented all of these special memories with video albums that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Finally, on March 2, 2019, God blessed Jack with a holy death and took him home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead. Thanks be to God for his life here on earth and his everlasting faith.

Jack is survived by his wife, Edwina; his daughter Krista Byrd and husband Bryan Byrd of Olathe, KS; his daughter Heather Sponsel and husband Dustin Sponsel of Ponder, TX; grandchildren Harrison Byrd, Owen Byrd, Anderson Byrd, Shyanne Sponsel and Isaiah Sponsel. The family would like to especially thank the Reverend Michael Heckmann of St. Paul Lutheran Church Plainview, TX for faithfully visiting Jack and Edwina this past year and regularly serving them the Lord’s Supper. Thank you to the nurses and CNA’s who took care of Jack and made him smile. And lastly, to all the family and friends who kept Jack and his loved ones in prayer.
