Debra Leigh Hastings passed away unexpectedly and peacefully of cancer on February 20, 2019 at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. Debbie was born in Norfolk on April 10, 1953 to “Eley” and Dorothy (Lindsay) Dortmundt. From a young age, Debbie showed herself to be a caring, compassionate person, showering not only her friends and family with love, but also a menagerie of animals: dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and even a snake. After graduating from Lake Taylor High School, she worked in sales at various stores including People’s Drug Store, where she would meet her future husband, David William Hastings. Together they had one daughter, Caitlin Mallory Hastings. Debbie later became an employee of Wal-Mart, where she continued to work for the next 26 years. For vacations, she loved to travel with her family, especially to Disney World. In her free time, she would sit on her patio swing amongst the many potted plants she loved to tend and watch the neighborhood deer that she and David fed every night. In addition to her husband and daughter, Debbie is survived by Pam (sister-in-law), Bob (son-in-law), Jill (niece), James (nephew), Trudy and Joni (cousins), Paul (brother-in-law), Janet (sister-in-law), Maria and Susan (Caity’s friends who Debbie loved as her own daughters), as well as her beloved dog Penny and “grand-dogs” Beckett and Watson. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jimmy.

Funeral services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk on Sunday March 3, 2019 at 1:30pm. As you enter the main entrance, take a left. The funeral service will be held under the canopy in the Elm section of the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Heritage Humane Society in Debbie’s honor at https://heritagehumane.org/one-time-gift/
