SOMMER, Marie Pauline (Scanlon) - Age 92, died Monday, June 30, 2008 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 AM Thursday, July 3, 2008 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, G3139 Hogarth Ave, Flint with Fr. Robert Copeland, celebrant. Interment will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-8 PM Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A scripture service will be held at 7 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the family. Mrs. Sommer was born January 26, 1916, the daughter of Thomas and Teresa (Flanagan) Scanlon. Mrs. Sommer was a 1934 graduate of St. Michael Catholic High School. She married Anton "Tony" Sommer on June 6, 1936 and he preceded her in death on March 15, 1984. She resided in Swartz Creek most of her life. Mrs. Sommer retired from General Motors in 1977 after 27 years of service. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, U.A.W. Local 651, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the St. Pius Altar Society. Mrs. Sommer was named "Woman of the Year" by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in 1983 for her charity work for needy children in Flint. Mrs. Sommer loved sewing and made hundreds of Christmas stockings every year and would fill them for area charities. She also made bibs for Veterans and other hospitalized people. Surviving are: 2 sons, Charles J. Sommer of Flint Twp., Michael A. Sommer; daughter, Dorothy Durish; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by: brothers, Paul, Arthur and George; sisters, Katherine, Frances and infant sister, Margaret; special companion, Noodles.
