s/o James Harris / Sarah Denison

In 1698, he removed from New London, Connecticut to Mohegan [later changed to Montville], and settled upon a tract of land granted by Owaneco, the Mohegan Sachem, to his wife, Sarah, adjoining lands of her father, Samuel Rogers, who had already settled there. His wife, Sarah was an especial friend and favorite of Owaneco, and herself and her husband soon became the recipient of large grants of land from that Sachem. While at New London he stayed himself "Jas. Harris, weaver", but after his removal to Mohegan, he drops that appellative and subsitutes that of "husbandman". He might well have added that of "landholder" also.

James died at the home of his son Lebbeus in "Paugwonk, 10 Feb 1757," in whose family he had lived after the death of his second wife in 1752. Salem once called "Paugwonk," had been jointly owned by a Niantic sachem named Sanhop, a Mohegan named Chappattoe and another kinsman from Uncas.

He left no will, and his estate was entered for probate at Colchester, 7 Mar 1757, by his son Lebbeus, who was appointed administrator. In this record he is styled "Capt. James Harris, late of Col., deceased. James and his wife were admitted to the church in Montville 7 Feb 1732.

James died 10 Feb 1757 aged 84yrs nearly, and he and both his wives, one on each side, were buried together in ancient Mohegan, about a mile or more southeasterly from the old meeting house in Montville, a double slate stone, of the old style, still marking the spot, and bearing the following inscription shown in the picture.

The space underneath was left by him for an inscription to his own memory, but his youngest son, Lebbeus, in whose family he died, and who settled his estate, removed soon after to Nova Scotia, and the inscription in memory of this worthy old patriarch remains still unwritten.
