U.S. Senator. Born in Newark, New Jersey, he was a newspaper publisher, engaged in the dry-goods, importing business and was a manufacturer of leather. He was a member of the board of aldermen of Newark, (1883-87) and was president of the first board of works for the City of Newark. In 1893, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1899. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business interests and also engaged in banking. He died at age 75 in Newark, New Jersey.
