Dr. Arthur B. Holmes, Jr., age 80, of Buckhannon, WV passed away on January 8, 2017 at home. He was born February 21, 1936, in Huntsville, Ala, a son of the late Arthur Barnes Holmes, Sr., and Wilma Roberson Holmes. On June 19, 1965, he married Jolanda Stuber who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Rebecca Knight and Cynthia Holmes; one niece Beth Knight; one nephew Jeffrey Knight and wife Pamela; one great nephew Andrew Knight; one great niece Ceihiah Knight and extended family in Switzerland. Dr. Holmes was the Dean of the Chapel at West Virginia Wesleyan College from 1970-1978 and Professor of Religion until his retirement in 2010. He was an ordained minister of the Florida United Methodist Church. He received his B.S. from Stetson University, his Master of Divinity from Emory University, and his Ph.D. from Drew University. He studied at the University of Zuerich and University of Tuebingen, Germany. He was member and past President of the West Virginia Humanities Council. Preaching in small country Churches in West Virginia gave him much enjoyment. Spending time at the farm at Ours Mill Rd. and taking walks with his beloved dog Bert were special, as was spending time in Switzerland hiking in the Alps, and visiting with family and friends. The family would like to thank WV Hospice for their kindness, understanding and patience and a special thank you to Denise Wright for the wonderful care that was given. A funeral service was held at the WVWC Chapel on January 12, 2017. At the request of Dr. Holmes, he was be cremated.
