Paul Dieterle Sampson passed away on October 1, 2012, at Heather Glen in Arden at the age of 93.

Paul was born on August 20, 1919, in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He was married to the late Mary Maynard Sampson for 69 years. He received both his bachelor's degree and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy at Pearl Harbor and attaining the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade.

Paul and Mary raised their children in Michigan, and then lived in New England for several years before moving south. They had five children: Carolyn (Charles) Hubbard of Metamora, MI; Cynthia Sampson of Asheville; Claudia (Douglas) Sherry of Biltmore Lake; Daniel Sampson of Prescott Valley; AZ; and Gwendolyn (Fred) Natusch of Hyannis, MA. They had seven grandchildren: Nevin(Cynthia) Hubbard of Lake Orion, MI; Mollie (Andrew) Lammers of Asheville; Katrina (Fernando)Ferreyra of San Rafael, CA; Monica (Michael) DiPilato of Raleigh; Fred Jr. (Jen) Natusch, Adam Natusch, and Carrie (Bryan) Cimeno, all of Martha's Vineyard, MA. Paul had 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bill Bachman of Battle Creek, MI.

From the late 1940s to 1970, Paul was the owner and president of Sampson-Hill Corporation, a direct marketing company in Michigan. Following the sale of his company, he became the executive manager of the Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston, MA, for two years. He then spent more than 20 years leading seminars on six continents for the Direct Marketing Association. At one time, he was named one of the top 10 after-dinner speakers in the country.

Most importantly, Paul was a vibrant father and grandfather with an incredible sense of humor and a vivid imagination. His grandchildren treasure memories of the elaborate stories he would create to entertain them, the letters he wrote to them, and the magical walks he would take with them in the mountains of New Hampshire.

Paul's family is deeply grateful to the staff of Heather Glen Assisted Living at Ardenwoods Retirement Community for their compassionate care of him for more than three years, and also for their loving support of his family.

The family will hold a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Paul may be given to Carolina Day School, 1345 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Paul's family has many connections to this school. His daughter Claudia, granddaughter Mollie and her husband Andy work there; his granddaughters Katrina and Monica are alumnae; and three of his great-grandchildren are students in Carolina Day's Lower and Middle Schools.
