Wayne had lived in Greentown for 56 years before moving to Palmetto, Florida in 2016. He was born February 15, 1938, to Raymond and Gladys (Ratcliff) Powell, in Kokomo Indiana. He graduated from Western High School. He married Louie “Faye” Powell who preceded him in death on October 26, 2015.
He had worked as a press operator for the Howard County news until their closing and then went to work building storage barns.
He had fond memories of going to Kokomo sitting on his dad's shoulders so he could see the President of the United States, President Truman. He enjoyed wintering in Brooksville, Florida for 25 years.
He had many hobbies, collecting NASCAR diecast, being a HAM radio operator for 40 years, “kb9ox”, his “cb” nickname was Fireball. He served on the Greentown fire department for 30 years, serving as chief for 7 years. He also enjoyed fishing, following the World of Outlaws sprint cars, his favorite NASCAR driver was Jeff Gordon.
He is survived by his children, Wayne “Chip” Powell, Raymond “Jeff” (Sandy) Powell, Katrina (Brian) Lavengood and Sherry (William) Webb; grandchildren, Amanda (Ryan) Lavengood Weaver, Kara (Christopher) Lavengood Pouge, Kevin DeRossett, Amy (Brian) Powell DeVoss, Jullian (Matthew) Hillman McNaught, John (Taylor) Hillman, Jeffery (Taryn) Hillman, Jordan Powell, Addison (Thomas) Powell Yager and Andrew (AJ) Powell; 17 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Donald (Sue) Powell and Max Powell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; children, Blaine Powell, Ramona Faye Powell, Deloris Gayle Powell and Yvonne Lynn Powell; and granddaughter, Michelle Lavengood DeRossett.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main Street, Greentown. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. also at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service in Greenlawn Cemetery, Greentown.
