Richard W. Sonner enlisted as a musician on 4 September 1861 in Company A, 10th Infantry Regiment Virginia at Camp Blair, Virginia. According to military records, he was 5'1" with blue eyes, dark hair and dark complexion.
He married Sarah R. Bowman in Shenandoah County, Virginia, 20 September 1864. He married Phillippa Zea in Shenandoah County 20 October 1874.
