From 'Historical Celebration of the Town of Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts," 1879, p. 436:
"The Nichols Family. William Nichols of Springfield appears to have been one of the early settlers of Brimfield, though he evidently died before the distribution of the land to the original proprietors, as Lot 8 is apportioned to 'William Nichols heirs.' The descendants (including Samuel memorialized here) were large landowners...and the dwelling house now (in 1879) occupied by L. A. Cutler, and supposed to be the oldest in town, was built by Captain Samuel Nichols nearly 125 years ago (in 1772)."
