Winston-Salem- Mr. Howard William Wells, age 86, died Sunday, February 24, 2019. He was born in Riverside, Pennsylvania, November 9, 1932, to the late Willard and Bertha (Nuss) Wells. Mr. Wells was retired from Lucent Technologies, formerly AT&T and Western Electric Co. He retired as President & CEO of Lycom A/S, a fiber optics company in Copenhagen, Denmark that was a subsidiary of AT&T. Mr. Wells his degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University. He also completed graduate studies at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business as well as at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a member of an Air Sea Rescue Squadron. Mr. Wells served as Vice Chairman of the Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission. He was a past President of the Old Hickory Council, Boy Scouts of America, having served on the board for over 30 years and received the Silver Beaver award for service to Scouting. He was a past President of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Winston-Salem Council. He was a long-time member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. While living in Denmark, he was a Council officer for the International Church of Copenhagen, and a member of the Board of Directors for the Fulbright Educational Exchange Program between Denmark and the United States. Mr. Wells is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Neil Oates Wells; four sons and two daughters: H. William Wells and his wife Karen of Nashville, TN, Douglas Wells and his wife Cathy of Hickory, NC, Neil Wells and his wife Cindy of Jefferson, GA, Melanie Lipani of Winston-Salem, Jonathan Wells and his wife Maryam Ahmed of Boone, NC, and Amy Leonard and her husband David of Winston-Salem; fourteen grand children and fourteen great grand children. Funeral services will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019 with Rev. R. Craig Ford officiating. Inurnment will be private. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 6600 Silas Creek Pkwy., Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
