Death claims civic leader Henry L. Hess

Henry L. Hess, former U.S. attorney and 1938 Democratic nominee for governor, died Friday after a brief illness.
Mr. Hess, who lived at 2840 NW Cornell Road, was born Oct. 12, 1890, in Rexburg, Idaho.
After graduation from the University of Oregon, he began law practice in North Powder in 1914. From 1921 to 1928, he was with the firm of Green and Hess in La Grande.
Active in the Democratic Party, he was state senator for Union and Wallowa counties from 1932 to 1936.
In the 1938 primary election, he won over incumbent Gov. Charles H. Martin by a 7,000-vote plurality but was defeated in the general election by Charles Sprague, then editor of the Salem Statesman.
Mr. Hess was president of the Willamette Democratic Society and served as U.S. attorney from 1946 to 1954, after which he practiced law in Portland until his death.
He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a past exalted ruler of Elks and a Scottish Rite Mason.
Surviving are his wife Madeline; two sons, Henry L. Hess Jr., bankruptcy judge, and Raymond L. Hess, a dentist, both of Portland; a stepdaughter, Phyllis Neilson; two brothers, Leland F. Hess of Portland and Charles Ellis Hess of Ukiah, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Iva Tyler of Ontario and Mrs. Eliza May Burke of Portland, and five grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Caldwell’s Colonial Mortuary.
