ALLYN Richard "Gene" Richard (Gene) Allyn, age 80, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007, at the Swan Creek Retirement and Medical Center, in Toledo, Ohio. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorothy and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald. He will be missed by his dear friends. Gene was born in Toledo, Ohio July 16th, 1926, and attended Libbey High School. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 and served his country proudly in Shanghai, the Philippines, and New Guinea. Upon discharge from the Navy, Gene began work as a fireman for the New York Central Railroad. Over the years, he became an engineer with Penn Central, and retired from Conrail at the age of 56. Gene loved to play golf and bowl and was the proud recipient of several bowling trophies. His asthma and rheumatoid arthritis kept him from pursuing his hobbies but he enjoyed a lifelong interest in sports. Gene and Dorothy loved to travel. Among the special places they visited were California, Dorothy's birthplace in Alberta, Canada, and Hawaii. They took several cruises, the most recent being an Alaskan cruise in 2003. Dorothy would like to extend a special thanks to the loving, supportive staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, as well as Gene's caregivers at the Swan Creek Retirement and Medical Center. Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
