NAPA, CA — A child who was one of four people to die in a DUI hit-and-run collision Saturday night on Interstate Highway 80 in San Pablo was a student at Redwood Middle School in Napa, according to Napa Valley Unified School District officials. Napa residents Joseph Horn, 14, and his father Daryl Horn, 50, as well as Washington residents and family members, Troy and Baden Biddle, 52 and 12 respectively, were all killed in a crash reported at 8:11 p.m. on westbound Highway 80 at the San Pablo Dam Road off-ramp.
Friends said Joe Horn was following the path of his big brother, Jaren Horn, as a star athlete and was known as a tremendous pitcher full of life and personality.
Joe Horn was much like his father, Daryl Horn.
"(He) was always the life-of-the-party type of guy, hilarious, so fun to be around," Neal said.
Denise Horn, Daryl's wife and Joe's mother, works at the Napa Valley Unified School District, according to district spokeswoman Elizabeth Emmett.
"The Horn family has deep roots in our school community," Superintendent Patrick Sweeney said Monday in a statement.
"Right now, our counselors and other trained support staff are helping students and staff to process the tragedy," Sweeney said. "As the family's needs change, so will our efforts to help with whatever they need, and we will share that information as appropriate."
Jared Horn, a sophomore at University of California at Berkeley who plays as a pitcher for the school's baseball team, was also in the car. He survived the crash.
