John H. ‘Silly Pap’ Rhine
June 27, 1935 - Feb. 22, 2019
John H. “Silly Pap” Rhine, 83, Altoona, died Friday evening at his residence.
He was born in Huntingdon, son of the late George H. and Ruth M. (Blair) Rhine.
On Sept. 24, 1960, he married Judith A. Pry at Bethany Lutheran Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife, Judy; five children: Terri A. McGilvray, Penny J. Miller and husband, James, Kevin Rhine, Wendy S. Corle and husband, Gary, and Scott A. Rhine, all of Altoona; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin Rhine and wife, Judith, of Tyrone; and a sister-in-law, Edie Ann Frederick and husband, John, of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Weaver.
John retired from the maintenance department of Blair County in 2000, after 15 years of service. He had also been employed as a bartender at Herman’s Hotel for numerous years.
He was a Pennsylvania National Guard veteran and a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society.
John enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting, NASCAR racing especially Dale Earnhardt, Pittsburgh sports including the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins and all Tyrone sports. He also enjoyed going to the cottage at Newton-Hamilton.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2019, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Pastor Duane Coy officiating.
Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the funeral home to help with expenses.
