Hugh Miller Spencer, Jr., loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away at his home in Charlottesville, Va. on November 10, 2017, due to cancer. Born on February 20, 1941, in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of Thomasia and Hugh Spencer, Sr. and was preceded in death by his parents. Hugh is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Diane; his three children and children-in-law, Tom (Gina), Marti Green (Aaron), David (Wendy); and his six grandchildren, Rachael, Nicholas, Luke, Anna, Haley, and Sam. He is also survived by his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Belle Rogers (Jack) and Martha Saavedra (Pedro); sister-in-law, Ellen Lawson; and brother-in-law, Ed Plant (Charles McLain). In addition, he is survived by seven nieces and one nephew. Hugh was a graduate of The University of Virginia. After graduating, Hugh was assistant manager at WT Grant department store, manager of several Smith and Welton department stores in the Tidewater area, and the personnel manager and garden shop manager at Kmart for many years. He worked for 52 years with a 32 year run without missing a day of scheduled work. Always one to enjoy a good joke, Hugh often searched for just the right joke to tell a family member or friend. He loved being outdoors, jogging, walking, and working in his yard. Hugh will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A celebration of Hugh's life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Ivy Creek Natural Area, 1780 Earlysville Road, Charlottesville, Va., with Dr. Thomas E Leland, officiating.
