Services for J.R. Durrett were held in the Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo. Mr. Durrett died while on a fishing trip to his cabin at Tres Ritos, New Mexico. He was accompanied on the trip by his wife and her mother, Mrs. G.J. Teel. Mr. Durrett in the early 1900s taught school. He was principal of the school at McLean and it was there that he met and married Verna Teel. He moved to Clarendon from McLean and continued to teach school. He later began to deal in real estate. He moved to Amarillo in 1923. Survived by his wife; one son - Delmar Durrett; one daughter - Mrs. McDonald Hays; six grandchildren; three brothers - Beachamp E. Durrett, Basil M. Durrett, J.A. Durrett.
