Horace Glenn Bates, 87, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday Feb. 19, 2019.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday Feb. 23 at the Don Grantham Funeral Chapel with Brad Parr officiating.
Glenn was born in Ryan, Oklahoma on Jan. 10, 1932 to Hollie and Beatrice Bates. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and retired after 20 years of service.
He met and married his first wife, Marjorie Huff in Alex (Ell-lick), Oklahoma and three children were born while they traveled the country with the Army. Once he retired, they continued to travel by motorhome and introduced the grandchildren to many new places. He finally settled in Duncan, Oklahoma to take care of his ailing wife who passed on May 30, 1992. He married his second wife, Doris Patterson on Dec. 27, 2002 after a long courtship.
Throughout his retirement he continued his service as an active member in multiple organizations that he held very dear to his heart, VFW, Moose Lodge, Optimist Club, Masons and the American Legion. His most memorable was as a "Tin Lizzie" driver for the Shriners. Not only did he serve his country and communities, but what he loved the most was spending time with his family and friends.
One of his most frequent stops was El Campesino Restaurant with many friends and local family members for coffee, smoke and great conversation. Everyone felt welcome and you might even get your coffee free if you won the "dollar game" or you might place a dollar bet with another table mate on an upcoming game.
Survivors include a brother, Don Bates; a daughter, Brenda Bates and a son, Sterling "Sonny" Bates; three grandchildren: Glenda Jones, Aimee Acuff and spouse Donald, Casey Bates and spouse Chris; five great grandchildren: Zoey Boice, Joshua and Alaena Curry, Briana and Madison Acuff; and several other family and friends including a few very close ones, Bill Huff, Linda Livington,Tammy Knight, Tony and Rhonda Huff, Roger Hill, Justin Curry, Ed Carmen, Larry Lee, Rhea Harris and his long time caretaker, Freda Kuntz.
He was preceded in death by his two wives; an infant daughter; three brothers; and a sister.
The family would like to share a heartfelt thank you to Rick and others at El Campesino Restaurant for always making Glenn feel like family; to Freda for taking care of him when we couldn't; and all the extended family for being there. Your care and compassion mean more than we could ever express.
