She graduated from Linn Grove Consolidated School and attended Buena Vista College earning her teacher’s degree. Later, she furthered her education by attending Denver University in Colorado and Drake University in Iowa. She taught school in Bradgate, Rutland, Greenville and Sac City.
In November of 1943, Hope was married to Carl W. Peterson, who was killed six months later in Italy serving his country in World War II.
While teaching in Sac City she met and married Wm. Theodore (Ted) Leonard and to this union three children were born: William George, Rebecca Jean, and Bryan Jay. It was heart-breaking when Bryan acquired a-plastic anemia and passed away ten days before his 7th birthday. She enjoyed caring for her home and family keeping busy cooking, cleaning, gardening, caring for her flowers, sewing, and crafts of various kinds. Hope always looked forward to the family vacation and each summer helping others.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She and Ted were married in that church and had 57 years together before he passed away in December of 2007.
Survivors include her son: William (Bill) George Leonard and fiancée, Mary Archambalt; daughter Rebecca (Becky) Jean Leonard-Shull and husband Bob Shull; grandson Ross Cameron Leonard of Lytton, IA. Other survivors include her sisters: Gladys Zwiefel of Spirit Lake, IA, Helen Porter of Spencer, IA, and Shirley (Ray) Ohrtman of Spencer, IA; her brothers: Glenn (Pat) Lovrien of Hemet, CA, and Bob Lovrien or Rockford, IL; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Hope was preceded in death by her son Bryan; husbands Carl and Ted; her parents; and three sisters: Inez Lauritsen, Ruth Lovrien, and Alice Carlson.
