Gaylene was born on July 31, 1936 in Madison, Kansas the daughter of Albert Monroe and Anna Elizabeth (Wiedmer) Garriott. She married her loving husband, Harold E. Hale, on November 26, 1954 in El Dorado, Kansas. Surviving family members include: daughter, Kathryn Singer of Topeka; grandsons, Ryan Singer of Lawrence, and Anthony Singer of Wichita; great granddaughters, Ava and Abigail Singer; sister-in-law, Lee Garriott of Emporia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gaylene worked for the City Treasurer’s Office of Emporia for 33 years working her way up to City Treasurer before retiring in 1999. She was known to be a precise and devoted employee. After retirement she continued to use her book keeping skills for her husband’s successful welding business until his retirement in 2017.
She was both preceded and devastated by her husband Harold’s death on May 23, 2018 in Emporia. Gaylene did her best to carry on and keep busy through her participation in the Red Hat Society and the Emporia Senior Center. She relished the spirited conversations she had with her grandsons, nieces and nephews about current events and family happenings. She enjoyed following the lives of her great grand daughters and grand nieces and nephews. She was both thankful and proud of the life that she and Harold built together.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Burial will take place following at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Emporia. Memorial contributions to the Emporia Senior Center can be sent in care of the funeral home.
