Helen Corrine Mooney was born on April 21, 1918 in Maple Lake, Wright County, Minnesota. Her parents were Frank and Gertrude Jung Happe. Frank had a merchandise store in Maple Lake and then bought the Jude Hotel. A fire destroyed the hotel and he built another hotel where the American Legion now stands. Her mother Gertrude died in a flu epidemic in 1920 when she was 2 years old. She also lost two other siblings Philip who died at age 4 and Leo who died in infancy.
Her father then remarried in 1921 to Matilda Shefchik. They had one child Clarence Happe. Helen lived in Chicago for about 10 years and then returned to Maple Lake where Helen went to school. She graduated from Maple Lake HIgh School in 1936.
On February 4, 1942 Helen married Clayton Mooney. Helen and Clayton were blessed with seven children: Ray, Alice, Philip, Patrick, Martin, Lori,and Carmen. Helen was active in the community, a member of the St. Timothy's Ladies Auxiliary, The American Legion Auxiliary, The Maple Lake Lady Bugs, and instrumental in getting the Maple Lake Library established. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clayton, her son Martin, and her brother Clarence Happe.
Helen is survived by her children, Raymond (Gloria) of St. Michael, Alice Shafer of Annandale, Philip (Theresa) of Maple Lake, Patrick (Eileen) of Clear Lake, Loretta (James) Buckholz of Burnsville, and Carmen (Kenneth) Prine of St. Michael; daughter-in-law, Jill Mooney of South Haven; 17 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
